Women
in the
early buddhist tradition
by Corinne Richter
This recording presents the tensions between spiritual equality and social inequality for women in the early Theravada Buddhist tradition in India. Taken from an essay written for a Buddhist Meditative Traditions course, it focuses on one particular nun, Dhammadinna, and her struggles to become a nun and her continued struggles therein. The overarching comparison of drastically different experiences of Nuns and Monks within the tradition relates to gendered appraisals of contributions today.
